Edit: got some answers, thanks. They can be shifted into neutral and pushed, right? Reason I ask is the tenant has one and I need it moved to the other side of the driveway so I can get a dumpster dropped closest to the house to rip off roof. His explorer is in the way. And he asked me if I had car dollies available.

You can push an AWD with the main trans in neutral, it’s just harder than it might be otherwise because you’ll be turning the trans outputs and probably all four wheels. Unfortunately, the AWDs use a Borg Warner 4400 series box with viscous clutches and no transfer case neutral as far as I can tell. Pushing, yes, but not long distance or it’ll get hot and dry and toasty.

Yes. It has a transfer case, so it’s okay if in 2WD and pushed a short distance.

Edit: but why doesn't he just drive it away??

Column shift? If it doesn’t move from park with the ignition not on lock and the brake depressed, use the shift lock override. It should be under the steering column on a Ford.

Even if it’s hard to push, it should be able to be pulled with a tow rope for about 20’.

Thanks, I'm just making sure I'm not missing something. I just hope the dumpster gets delivered today or tomorrow.

He was asked if car dollies were available. It’s very possible the Exploder has Exploded. Also, the AWD Explorers are actually full-time AWD on-demand, not selectable, so no 2WD.

Yes but he has keys, he is just a dumbass, tried getting it to start rather than just pushing it.

As explained it's awd, not available to put in 2wd. Something about a fuel pump, so it doesn't run, I just need it moved out of the way.

Yes, you can. As stated you can’t put it in 2WD so there may be more friction to overcome.
